The UN Biodiversity Convention’s subsidiary bodies

The UN Biodiversity Convention’s subsidiary bodies holds virtual meetings essential to the development of post-2020 global biodiversity framework, from 17 to 30 May 2021.

The twenty-fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-24) and the third meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-3) will be organised in a virtual format from 17 to 30 May 2021.

These virtual meetings are essential as a prelude to the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). They have already been postponed twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic and is now expected to be adopted in October 2021 in Kunming, China.

The sessions of the Subsidiary bodies will address elements of the post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, as well as address other key issues on the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity and the equitable sharing of benefits from the use of genetic resources. Indeed, governments agreed to negotiate a ten-year global framework for managing biodiversity, as a pathway to negotiate and achieve the 2050 vision of the Convention on Biological Diversity and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-24) is the intergovernmental body responsible for providing scientific, technical, and technological advice related to the implementation of the Biological Diversity Convention. It plays a key role in assessing the current status of the world’s biodiversity, identifying solutions and in bringing emerging issues related to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity to the attention of the global community.

The Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-3) on its part, focuses on four areas of work, namely: review of progress in implementation; identify strategic actions to enhance implementation; strengthening means of implementation; and operations of the Convention and the Protocols.
